SGPC gives the gift of hearing to 12 deaf and mute children – Times of India

AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) runs Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences (SGRDUHS) provided a gift of hearing to 12 deaf and mute children by operating them under its Program Screening of Universal Neonatal Deafness (SOUND)”, informed Dr. A P Singh, Dean, SGRDUHS here on Monday.

A cochlear implant is a life-changing surgery but the cost of an implant is an affordability issue for many people.

He said these children were being operated upon free of cost with implants partially sponsored by SGPC and SGRDUHS adding that the SGRDUHS had started its Cochlear Implant Program three years back on the occasion of prakash purab of Sikh’s first master Guru Nanak Dev by operating two children Manjapand, Jaisvi.
“Both of them are speaking fluently and at par with normal children of their age, which is the true outcome of cochlear implant,” said A P Singh.

He said these poor and needy children have been selected carefully from all over Punjab by the selection committee and were being operated upon by chief operating surgeon Dr. S P Dubey from Bhopal along with team of surgeons of SGRDUHS.
